September 3: Dr. Seuss, wolves, coyotes, worms and sun painting

Today was our first day back to homeschooling. I thought I would give them a little gift for this special day. I painted a 'book' box that I had on hand and decorated it with some great Dr. Seuss quotes. Here are some of the quotes:

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And YOU are that guy
who'll decide where to go.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

You'll get
mixed up with
many strange
birds as you go.

Kid you'll move mountains!

Inside the box there were some back to home school goodies. Well, nothing to jump up and down about but some stuff that might come in handy.
Polymer clay
Pencils
Erasers
Bookmarks
Math Dice
A thesaurus and
Lollipops.
I also printed out and revised a poem I thought was appropriate but I'm just now remembering it. I'll have to give that to them tomorrow.

We played Wolves and Coyotes from a new math book called 25 Super Cool Math Board Games. It was a cool game. We also played with the new Math Dice. Again, very cool.
We worked on our handwriting, read (J read from Om Kas Toe and B worked on his qu- words) and J learned how to write a persuasive argument. Now, J is a girl that doesn't like to be told what to write about but she seemed very excited to learn this skill. I can see those gears in her head turning. . . what have I gotten myself into! :)
More reading. . .this time about homelessness. Did you know that there are about the same amount of homeless children in the world as there are people in the United States? Now that was eye opening for me. We also talked about what we could do personally to help with this.

In the afternoon. . .
Worms.

And more worms.

A little art. Sun printing on fabric.

I have to say this is quite new to me. I had only so-so results today. Could be that I was excited and didn't really read over the directions.

This is some fabric I did last spring that I think turned out much better. Oh well. If at second you don't succeed, try, try again.

Soccer for J in the late afternoon and now at 7 p.m they're just coming in after bike riding and plasma car riding with friends. It was a happy, full day. O.k, to tell the truth, B just walked in and his dad asked him how the first day of homeschooling went and he answered, "boring". Now, you just cant win. :)

  1. Hello Jane! Thank you for your comment on my blog. Yes, Harvest moon is next month! My (susan Branch) calendar says it is today, but you are right, it is next month!
    Thanks again!

  2. What a full first day!

The worms look like fun and I think the sunprint fabric is so pretty.

Don't be discouraged ~ when Owen's Dad asks him what he did all day he usually says " nothing." :)

  3. Don't worry about that "boring" comment. I hear that from my kids to. Even if they have fun all day long, if they're bored at the moment the question is asked, that's what they'll say. :) Your school year looks like it got off to a great start.

  4. The sun prints are pretty! I spose I should get some more paper. For the fabric you used the same thing?
And what are the worms? Melted lollipops?
